“The message I put out to people who are prepared to write me off before even meeting me: get over it. It’s the same message I used to give myself whenever I spent too much time worrying what people would think of me or how I’d risen to my position in the company or what attributes I brought to the table. I’d catch myself agonizing along these lines and think, just get over it. It’s not your problem, it’s theirs. After all, I eventually realized, we’ve all got our own baggage.” —Ivanka Trump, The Trump Card

I was contemplating skipping my run today. I couldn’t get out of work as early as I planned and I wanted to go to a 7pm yoga class. But - my new Victoria’s Secret bathing suits were delivered today. Ughhh. After I quickly tried them on, running was not an option! So I laced up my sneakers and did two fast pre-yoga miles.

How to Leave Work an Hour Earlier Every Day: (Glamour, August 2010)
  • Every morning at work, do you most important task first: Decide right away (ideally the night before) what that task is; you’ll save time not having to review your task list.
  • At a meeting: show up on time and come with something you can contribute. Speak early and focus on solutions and actions.
  • Don’t let others distract you: tell the chatty co-worker, your mom, or needy friend that you’re on a deadline or ask if you can talk to them after work. (I need to get much better at this. I get distracted [and I distract others] far too easily.)
  • Stay organized: keep files for everything, including a ‘hot’ file, for projects you’re working on. (This I do - and it really helps!)
  • Don’t get distracted by the internet. (Easier said than done, right?)
  • You don’t have to make everything perfect: let 20% be perfect and the other 80% good enough. (I’m not sure if this is feasible for me - while it seems great in theory, and would probably get me out of the office much earlier, I’m not sure if I can accept 80% of my work to only be ‘good enough.’)
  • If you’re constantly working late, set a goal to leave 30 minutes earlier: When you have a deadline you’re less likely to waste time. (I’m starting to do this three times per week - I’ve scheduled work out sessions [and written them in my planner, iPhone calendar, and work schedule] for after work, and I’m trying to get out of the office earlier so I can make them).

I’m finally getting around to watching Sunday’s episode of Mad Men, and I have some thoughts:

  • Peggy - new haircut, new attitude? She grew up and has ideas! And opinions! I kind of like the new her.
  • Don Draper is into spanking? Weird - right?
  • I still like Roger Sterling much more Don Draper.
  • That nurse from Grey’s Anatomy (with the pixie haircut) will play a nurse on next week’s episode? Is she always cast as a nurse?

“Russell Simmons, the hip-hop mogul, likes to remind his younger employees that stress does not equal hard work. He loves the energy young people bring to his organization, but he has to consistently remind them to channel it more effectively. ‘I appreciate that these kids want to get it right,’ he said. ‘But the mistake they make is thinking that the time they spend worrying about something is the same as actually working on it.’” —Ivanka Trump, The Trump Card

In a recent study, women dieters who strength trained lost nine extra pounds in ten weeks, compared to those who only dieted (Women’s Health, June 2010).

I guess this means I better step up my strength training. I’ve been majorly slacking recently.

“I knew I was different, and I also knew what I wanted. I wanted a body I could be proud of and feel truly comfortable in. But I also wanted to start treating myself well. I wanted to feed myself well, keep myself watered, nurture myself as you do a seed that you’re trying to coax into a flower. I wanted to be healthy and feel the energy and confidence that comes from living healthfully. I wanted to continue to take the kinds of risks I had just started to take – meeting new people and trying new things – without letting fear of any kind of physical limitations stop me. And I knew that recognizing and dealing with my unique relationship with food would be key to getting me there.” —

Lisa Delaney, Secrets of a Former Fat Girl
